FAMILYÂ &Â DOMESTICÂ VIOLENCEÂ Â (FDV)
At the Perth Injury and Trauma Research Institute (PITRI), we recognise the devastating impact of Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) on women and children across Australia. Each day, countless individuals endure the heavy oppression of domestic (or intimate partner) violence, manifested and disguised in various forms such as physical, emotional, and financial abuse, as well as more subtle coercive behaviors.

Drawing upon twenty years of data from a single trauma hospital in Perth, we have uncovered that FDV is undeniably one of the most alarming and urgent social issues that demands our immediate attention. Research and data from trauma services should elicit a rapid and universal reaction from governments. During the recent pandemic we saw that governments can respond quickly and effectively with blistering speed and effect . That is why PITRI is committed to funding and coordinating high-level research into the trends of FDV, identifying risk groups, and understanding associated factors. We firmly believe that sharing FDV data is paramount to devising successful strategies, and spurring governments to action. Valuable insights can be gleaned from Health, Police, Legal, Social Services, and Education departments. By amalgamating this data, we can expose the true extent of FDV in all its ugliness. As our population ages and younger generations grapple with the burdensome cost of living, vulnerable elderly family members have become easy targets for abuse. Elder abuse is insidious, often concealed, and challenging to detect.

While no single organisation can single-handedly provide all the solutions and resources to combat FDV, PITRI's contribution lies in supporting and conducting comprehensive research. By shedding light on the prevalence of FDV, understanding its complexities, and highlighting the impact on victims, we strive to pave the way for effective strategies and interventions.
Together, we can take a stand against Family and Domestic Violence and create a safer and more compassionate society for all. Join us in our mission to end the cycle of violence and foster a future where every individual can live free from fear and harm at home as in public.
